Why Your Table Light Flickers and How to Fix It

A table light that flickers is usually a bulb, dimmer, or power issue, not a broken lamp. Work through these checks before you replace the fixture.

Quick Answer

Start by reseating the bulb, then test the same bulb in a different lamp and the same lamp with a different bulb. That split tells you whether the fault is the bulb, the connection, or the fixture, and most flicker cases end there.

Why Flicker Usually Isn't the Lamp

A table light is a simple circuit: power in, a socket, a bulb, and a switch or dimmer. Flicker almost always comes from one of those four points rather than the shade, the timber, or the base. That is good news, because three of the four are cheap or free to fix.

The exception is a loose or worn socket, which is a fixture problem. Before you assume that, rule out the bulb and the power source, because a socket replacement is the only step here that needs tools.

When the Flicker Points to the Dimmer or Bulb Type

If the lamp flickers only at certain brightness levels, or buzzes as it flickers, the dimmer and the bulb are not matched. LED bulbs have driver electronics that some dimmers cannot regulate smoothly, and the symptom is most obvious at the low end of the dial. A non-dimmable LED on a dimmer circuit will flicker at every setting.

This is a compatibility issue, not a fault, so the fix is to match the bulb to the dimmer or use the dimmer's stated bulb type. If the lamp is not on a dimmer at all, skip this section entirely and go back to the bulb and socket checks.

When to Stop Troubleshooting and Replace

Stop and replace the lamp if the socket is cracked, scorched, or feels loose no matter how firmly you seat the bulb, or if the flex is frayed or the switch is hot to the touch. Those are safety issues, not flicker issues, and no amount of bulb swapping fixes them.

If the lamp is under warranty, contact the retailer before opening or rewiring anything, because DIY repairs can void it. For a lamp you have owned for years with a worn socket, replacement is usually cheaper than a repair.

Flicker Diagnosis: Symptom, Cause, Action

  • Flickers when you touch or nudge the lamp: Likely a loose bulb connection. Switch off, let the bulb cool, then reseat it firmly in the socket. If it still flickers when nudged, the socket contacts are worn and the fixture needs attention. If reseating fixes it, note the bulb type so you buy the same base size next time.
  • Flickers constantly, even when untouched: Swap in a known-good bulb of the same type. If the flicker stops, the original bulb or its driver was failing. If it continues, the fault is in the lamp or its power supply. Keep one spare bulb on hand to make this test a two-minute job.
  • Flickers only at low brightness or buzzes on a dimmer: The bulb and dimmer are incompatible. Check the dimmer's minimum load and supported bulb type, then fit a dimmable bulb that matches. If the dimmer is old, replacing it is often the cleaner fix. Non-dimmable LEDs on a dimmer will flicker at every setting, so check the bulb box first.
  • Flickers in one outlet but not another: The problem is the outlet or circuit, not the lamp. Test the lamp on a different circuit in another room. If it is stable there, have an electrician check the original outlet. Move the lamp before you spend money on a replacement.
  • Socket is cracked, scorched, or hot: Stop using the lamp. Unplug it and do not attempt a repair. Replace the fixture or contact the retailer if it is under warranty. Heat and scorch marks are the one symptom you should never troubleshoot further.
