Why Your Pendant Light Hangs Crooked and How to Fix It

Diagnose why a pendant light hangs crooked, fix uneven ceiling light issues yourself, and know when to call an electrician for a level hanging lamp.

Quick answer

A pendant light usually hangs crooked because of an off-center ceiling rose, a bent or kinked suspension, or a bulb that is too heavy for the shade. Turn off the power, check the ceiling rose alignment and suspension first, then swap in a lighter bulb if the shade still tips. If the ceiling itself is uneven or the fixture is pulling away, stop and call an electrician.

Check the ceiling rose alignment first

The ceiling rose is the visible plate where the pendant meets the ceiling. If it was screwed in slightly off-center or the ceiling surface is uneven, the whole pendant will hang at an angle even when the flex is straight. Turn off the circuit at the breaker, remove the shade and bulb, and hold a spirit level against the flex just below the rose. If the bubble is off, loosen the rose screws a quarter turn, adjust the plate until it sits flush, and retighten. On a lath-and-plaster ceiling, the rose can sit proud on one side; a thin shim behind the high edge often corrects this without redrilling.

Inspect the suspension and flex for kinks

Wooden pendants often use a fabric flex or a shaped timber arm rather than a rigid rod. A flex that has been twisted during installation or pinched inside the rose will hold a curve and pull the shade off vertical. With the power off, unhook the shade and let the flex hang free. If it still curves, gently warm it with a hairdryer on low and hang a small weight overnight to relax the memory. For pendants with a timber loop or arm, check that the fixing screws at the top and bottom are equally tight; one loose screw lets the arm rotate slightly and the shade drops to one side.

Match the bulb weight to the shade

A bulb that is too heavy or too long for the shade can pull the pendant off level, especially on designs with a single suspension point. Check the maximum wattage and bulb shape recommended by the manufacturer. If you have fitted a large decorative filament bulb, try a smaller or lighter equivalent. On a pendant like the Norden - Voronoi II Pendant, the exposed bulb is part of the design, so choose a bulb that matches the intended visual weight rather than oversizing it. Never exceed the fixture's stated bulb rating.

When the ceiling or joist is the real problem

If the rose sits flush but the pendant still leans, the ceiling plane itself may be out of level, or the fixture may be fixed into a joist that sits at an angle. Hold a long spirit level across the ceiling near the rose. A gap of more than a few millimetres across the level's length means the ceiling is the cause, not the pendant. You can sometimes compensate by adjusting the rose, but if the fixture is pulling away from the ceiling or you see cracked plaster around the screws, stop. That is a structural fixing issue, not a levelling one.

Diagnosis: symptom, cause, action, stop point

  • Shade leans to one side, rose sits flush: The flex or suspension is kinked or twisted, or the bulb is too heavy for the shade. Straighten the flex and fit a lighter bulb; if it still leans, check the ceiling plane.
  • Rose sits proud on one edge: The ceiling surface is uneven or the rose was screwed in off-center. Loosen, shim the high edge, and retighten; do not overtighten into crumbly plaster.
  • Pendant pulls away from ceiling or plaster cracks: The fixing is not secure in the joist or the ceiling structure is failing. Stop and call an electrician or builder; do not try to level it by adjusting the rose.

Pendant designs and levelling

  • Artus Pendant Small: Artus Pendant Small uses 118 birch dowels slotted into a laser-cut birch plywood frame around a blown-glass bulb. The dowel cage is visually symmetrical, so any tilt is obvious; check the rose and flex alignment before assuming the shade is faulty.

  • Noctis Skipper Pendant Large: Noctis Skipper Pendant Large is formed from undulating loops of ebonised timber with a pared-back curved design. Curved timber forms can look uneven if one fixing point is tighter than the other, so check both ends of the suspension are equally secured.
  • Norden - Voronoi II Pendant: Norden - Voronoi II Pendant combines oak with an exposed Voronoi II bulb and is designed as a focal point. Because the bulb is visible and part of the design, a bulb that is too heavy or oversized can tip the pendant; use the recommended bulb shape and weight.
